Do I Need an Author Website?

The short answer is: yes.

In today’s digital age, having a website is a mark of legitimacy and proficiency. Go are the days of phone books and paper directories. Here are some of the main reasons why you need a website:

Connectability

What do you think your readers do (especially the up and coming generations) when they want more information about you? Yep. They look for your website. A website is the central location

readers can use to connect with and learn about you and your books. Readers can:

  • Follow you on Social Media
  • Contact you
  • See all your books and where they can buy them
  • Subscribe to your mailing list
  • Get the latest news
  • Learn more about you

Basically, your author website is a hub for marketing.

Discoverability

Let’s say I’m on the hunt for another good thing to read. Amazon and Goodreads have failed me. And I just want to know what authors out there write dragon books (for example). So I Google it. Would your name come up on the list? Maybe not, since that is a general term. But what if I searched your book title or author name? Does a site where I can buy your books pop up on the first page?

Though discovering new authors through Google searches is rare, having your name appear in search results is important for being discovered.

Marketability

Have you ever gone to a book signing or fair? Or maybe just been chatting with someone and they are interested in your books? Where do you tell them to go? An author website is an easy thing to remember, write down, or even include on a card or a bookmark. This provides an easy way for you to market yourself. It’s one link. One location to send readers and fans to that contains everything they need to know about you.

Earnability

This one is probably a minor perk, but it is worth mentioning. If you sell your books on Amazon, you can sign up for an Amazon Affiliate account then use an affiliate link for each of the books you list on your website. If someone buys your book by click on this special link–you get an extra commission on top of your royalties. Extra money just for getting people to buy your book on Amazon, that’s nice.

So the Answer is Yes

Yes. You really do need an author website. If you don’t have one right this very instant it is not the end of the world. But you really should have an author website so that you can drive reader traffic there to expand your mailing list subscribers and have an easier time marketing your books.

So what is an author website exactly? Next week I’ll provide some good examples of author websites for you to get an idea of what they are really like.

In the meantime, happy wording.
